In an oral history done in 1964, Hall says he didn't much like sports, but that he was assigned the category by the mural committee, and found it challenging given the small space and having to paint around the corner (the sun linking this mural with "Sports" was the work of his neighboring artist, Takeo "Edward" Terada). At the time, Hall lived in Berkeley, which very likely explains the hulking ball carrier in a Cal uniform overpowering the images of Stanford fans. It's also interesting to note the aim of the archers not at their targets, but at the catcher's mitt on the other wall.
