Jane Clara Berlandina was born on March 15, 1898, in Nice, France, and was brought up in luxury, sent to private girls' schools and studied the violin. She was entranced by art and earned a degree from the exclusive Beaux Arts National School in Nice. She came to Tarrytown, New York to teach at a girls' school there, eventually moving to New York and mounting a one-woman show of her watercolors in 1929. There she met and married Henry Howard and came to California with him in 1931. Besides her watercolors in the abstract expressionist style she also did set designs for the San Francisco Opera and other local theater companies. She died in 1970.
