Takeo Edward Terada
1908-1993
1908-1993
Tokyo born, Terada came to the US in 1922, attended Chico High and trained with Otis Oldfield at California School of Fine Arts. Terada met Diego Rivera in 1931 when Rivera was creating the mural "The Making of a Fresco Showing a Building of a City" at the California School of Fine Arts. Rivera's fresco style and social realism had a strong impact on Terada, and soon he was creating his own mural for San Francisco's Coit Tower. Of twenty-six people selected to design murals for this WPA project, Terada was the only Asian artist. He returned to Japan in 1935 and became a leader of the art world in Japan until his death in 1993.
