José Moya del Pino was born March 3, 1891, in Priego, Cordoba, Spain and by age nine was already apprenticed to an artist, moving to study art in Madrid in 1907. In 1925, he was appointed director of an official Spanish artistic mission to the US, which brought him to San Francisco. He took up portrait painting in the Bay Area and married Helen Horst in 1928. He also began teaching at the CSFA. After his work for the Tower, he moved to Ross in Marin County and was a major figure in the Marin County art scene, painting portraits, murals and helping set up the Marin Art and Garden Center. He died in Ross in 1969.
